For licensed paralegals in Ontario, the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) mandates a specific annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement to ensure the maintenance of professional knowledge and ethical standards.

The standard annual requirement for paralegals in the 100% fee-paying category consists of 12 CPD Hours per calendar year.

Annual Hours Breakdown

The 12 hours must be divided into specific categories:

• 3 Professionalism Hours: These hours must focus on ethics, professional responsibility, or practice management.

  • 1 EDI Hour: Within the 3 Professionalism hours, at least one hour must specifically address Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). If you do not complete the mandatory EDI hour, your professionalism requirement remains incomplete even if you have finished three other professionalism hours.

• 9 Substantive Hours: These remaining hours can address substantive or procedural law topics relevant to your specific practice.

Accreditation and Reporting

• Accreditation: Only Professionalism and EDI hours must be accredited by the Law Society or an Accredited Provider. Substantive hours do not require formal accreditation but must be relevant to your professional development.

• Completion Deadline: All hours for the year must be finished by December 31.

• Reporting Deadline: Licensees must report their completed hours through LSO Connects by March 31 of the following year. Failure to report by this date can result in administrative suspension.
