What makes a mock exam actually useful

There are several practice exams on the market for the P1 and the Ontario bar, at a range of prices. Some are cheaper than ours. Here is how to tell what you are buying, whoever you buy it from.

The thing worth paying for is not questions

Question banks are not scarce. You can buy hundreds of practice questions for under $60, and if what you need is more repetitions, buy those. What is scarce is a rehearsal of the conditions: 160 questions, four and a half hours, an index you have to navigate under time pressure, and no way to stop the clock while you think. That is what decides the day, and it is the part most products do not reproduce.

Five questions to ask before you buy

1. Can you pause the timer?

If you can stop the clock, step away and come back, you are not rehearsing the exam. You are doing homework. Ask whether the timer runs continuously, and whether an attempt has to be completed in one sitting.

Ours does not pause. It runs from the moment you start, including breaks.

2. Does the answer format match?

The LSO uses four options and never uses “all of the above” or “none of the above”. Products that include them are training an elimination habit you cannot use on the day.

3. Is it the right length?

The P1 is 160 questions in 4.5 hours. A 50-question quiz tells you about your knowledge; it tells you nothing about your accuracy in hour four, which is where candidates lose marks.

4. Does it include an index?

These are open-book exams. Your index is the instrument you are actually being tested on. Practising without one rehearses nothing you will do on the day.

5. Can you measure improvement?

If the questions change between attempts, a higher score might mean an easier paper. If they stay the same, the change is you.

You can find practice questions for less. What you cannot easily find is a full-length sitting under exam conditions with a clock that will not stop. If your gap is knowledge, a study kit will serve you better and cost you less. If your gap is execution, which for most candidates leaving an accredited programme it is, buy the rehearsal.
